Serve in India
Service Corps Training
The Fellowship begins with a 10-day orientation in India that has four main themes:
- Team building
- Introduction to Indian society, politics, governance and development challenges
- Issue awareness – education, livelihood and health
- Preparing the Fellows for their placement
These themes are addressed through a combination of workshops, field visits, panel discussions and personal reflection. Presenters include leading figures in the development field in India, including academicians, development practitioners and civil servants.
In January/February, the Fellows come together for a midpoint retreat. This retreat allows the Fellows time to reflect on their experiences through small focused sessions led by alumni of the program. In addition, they participate in workshops at their NGO hosts, that further helps prepare them for completing and sustaining their projects. The annual Mid Point Conference for the current batch of fellows was held in February in Kottayam, Kerala. Besides being an opportunity for sharing experiences amongst themselves, the fellows went over to a field area of ‘INFACT’ a local NGO working with rural women in the area of Livelihoods. They spent time with the local communities covered under the ‘Malabari Goat Breed Improvement Programme’, a livelihoods support initiative of the organization.
In the end of May, prior to returning to the US, the Fellows gather for a three-day endpoint retreat to evaluate their experience and provide feedback to improve the program.
