Access To Education Urban Livelihood & Microfinance
Prayas, Gujarat (2003), ($42,444)
Prayas works on improving livelihoods among the poorest sections of society in Jhabua district (MP), and Bhuj and Dahod districts (Gujarat). AIF’s grant is supporting the restoration of livelihood activities for 300 marginalized women in the town of Anjar in Bhuj district, who were affected during the 2001 earthquake. The women are being organized into Self Help Groups, and are receiving skills training, access to credit, and other services.
The project has completed its 2 years. The SHG formation is complete. Various livelihood options have been identified, and trainings have happened around it. Apart from production centric options related to garment making and embroidery, other options like tiffin (food delivery) services have also been tried out. One of the activities that is really doing well is broom making. This is being done with the groups that were traditionally doing it. Recently, they have been linked up directly with traders of Assam, and the profits are expected to go up.
