Vikas, Gujarat (2004), ($78,000)
Vikas Centre for Development is a registered public charitable trust, established in 1978, and works with the under privileged sections of society to improve the quality of their lives.
The AIF grant supported various livelihood activities of 1,130 poor and marginalized families through various activities. It included setting up fish collection and marketing for 13 villages covering 470 families, freeing 202 families (against a target of 210) from land mortgage, by providing them access to credit and other support, and covering 450 women under an Urban & Microfinance program in Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara. This grant was to end in February 2006, but there remains some unfinished tasks and balance money. Vikas wants to work further on freeing some more families from land mortgage, and has sought permission to utilize this money over the next six months for this purpose. The project has been extended to August 2006.
