Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities
In AIF’s view, another important category of a left-out group are children with disabilities. While the challenges of working with this group are well recognised and much work has been done, the traditional approach has been to set up special schools. This has not only added physical separation to the existing social, but many argue that it has further handicapped the disabled from integrating into the mainstream.
In 2006, AIF proposes to support work on education for disabled children. An inclusive approach, it would ideally identify and overcome the barriers- physical, social, psychological, that exclude children with disabilities form the formal schooling system.
AIF will develop a strategy around the inclusive approach and support up to 2 projects in 2006. These projects will be urban to start with, and in partnership with NGOs that are willing to engage with and influence the state schooling system over time.
