Access To Education - Urban Children
Vimochana: Belgaum, Karnataka (2006) for three years ($ 104,000)
Vimochana is an organization working in the northern area of Karnataka. This year we are entering into partnerships with them to work for the education of Devadasi children and other scheduled caste community children in the area. The main issue affecting the education of Devadasi children is incidences of high dropout rates from school, due to the detrimental and negative attitudes of teachers and other children towards them. These detrimental attitudes have caused almost 40% of the children to drop out. Hence Vimochana would provide bridge courses for these drop out children, so that they can be mainstreamed back into the schools. Additionally, steps will be taken to sensitize the government school teachers on these issues.
