DR. POONAM BATRA

Dr. Poonam Batra is a leading academic in the field of Elementary Education. She has been engaged with processes of transforming classroom practices, pedagogy, teacher education and sector policy for over a decade and a half. She has been instrumental in the design and implementation of the acclaimed Bachelor of Elementary Education Programme (B.El.Ed), India's first four-year professional teacher education programme. Dr. Batra has been part of policy debate on quality and education of girls through inputs to the Ramamurthy Committee (1990) and the 10th Plan. She has led innovative evaluation and research projects reviewing DPEP, Lok Jumbish and Bangladesh's BRAC and GSS elementary education programmes.
Dr. Batra is a faculty member of the Maulana Azad Centre for Elementary and Social Education at the Central Institute of Education, University of Delhi. She has a Ph.D in the Social Psychology of Education from Jawaharlal Nehru University and publications with an emphasis on the application of Piagetian and Vygotskian perspectives.
